Biddeford and Saco are sister cities, located on the Atlantic Ocean, and divided by a narrow river, with U.S route #1 thru the center of both cities. The cities are in York County, the southern most county in Maine, at its northern edge. Most out of state people relate to the fact we are 7 miles north of Kennebunkport Maine, the summer home of former President Bush.
Biddeford has a population of 20,942, with Saco close behind with a population of 16,822. York County has 186,742 of the state of Maine's 1,274,923 people. Municipal services are extensive and compare favorably with those provided by larger cities. The hospital serving both cities is very modern and has specialists across a broad medical spectrum. Communications are modern and extensive. Biddeford and Saco have several public beach areas. Within one hour are the mountains and lake areas.
Transportation services in all modes are excellent. There is public transportation to and from the Portland area. Highways are convenient. Trucking services are more than adequate. Rail service for both freight and passengers is available to Boston. Biddeford's Municipal Airport is within the city limits and has a 3,000-foot runway. Charter flights and flight training is available. 15 miles north is Portland International Jetport, serviced by 5 major carriers. The Biddeford/Saco area has a significant manufacturing base.
Typical of New England, Education and Community facilities are extensive. The public school system in both communities is fully accredited. University facilities across a broad spectrum are available. Biddeford is the home of the University of New England and a branch of the University of Maine System is located in Saco. Both cities have libraries. Biddeford has a YMCA with an Olympic sized swimming pool. There is also an ice rink, and a City Theatre for theatrical performances. Cultural activities in Portland include fine arts, symphony, galleries, museums and theatre. There is a sports complex in Portland, home to the Portland Pirates hockey team and the Sea Dogs, a Double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox.
There are several shopping centers in Biddeford and Saco. The Maine Mall, with over 130 stores, is located 15 miles away in South Portland.
Christ Church Biddeford is located in the center of the city. Being an inner city parish in a predominantly Roman Catholic community provides us with challenging opportunities for service to our community.
